Vegetarian Recipe #14!

Hi guys, I just made vegetarian recipe #14 2 nights ago for dinner!  I'm so close!  While in Santa Fe, I promised I would learn to love avocados.  Prior to my trip, I'm ashamed to admit that I'd never tried avocado (or guac) - the color just freaked me out.  I wanted to love them, though...full of good fats...come on!  So, I tried them, loved them, and the rest is history.

I made this for Sarah and she also loved it - said it was one of the tastiest things she'd ever had.

Vegetarian Recipe #14 - Avocado and Macadamia nut tartines:
1 avocado - halved and sliced
3/4 cup macadamias - toasted and chopped in the food processor
1 small carrot - peeled and chopped into coarse little bites
salt
coriander
cumin
1 small garlic clove - also chopped in the food processor
basil - for topping
olive oil
Couple of slices good hearty bread - we used focaccia

Toast your macadamias for about 10-15 minutes at 300-350 degrees. Then let them cool while you toast up your bread in the oven.

Grind your macadamias + salt  + cumin + coriander (I don't have good estimates of how much of the spices I used - just to taste) and add the garlic.  Pulse it but don't completely pulverize it - it's tasty chunky.  Mix with the coarsely chopped carrot.  Drizzle olive oil on your bread then top with the sliced avocado.  Top the avocado with the macadamia nut mixture.  Top with basil.

I adapted the recipe from this blog:

Have a great day!

Scenes from the trip....

Hi everybody, I'm back!  It's a bit bittersweet - I had the greatest time you could imagine.  I learned an incredible amount, made great friends, and enjoyed every second of my Santa Fe time.

Sorry I've been out of touch lately - while I was there I felt like I needed to disconnect a little bit.

Some big changes have been happening in life since I got back.  Santa Fe was life-altering and made me reconsider what I want out of life, my career, and my relationships.  For the time-being, I need to focus on myself and something that I've always had trouble doing - being with just myself.

I'll leave it at that for now.  The little dogs were SO HAPPY TO SEE ME.  It was the cutest thing :-)  I am so happy to be reunited with my little loves!  I am also so happy & excited to be back to the lab!  Nothing like some time away from crappy data & results to rejuvenate you to try again!!

Have a wonderful day!

Peace,

J

You can't even belive how much of a good time I'm having...

Good morning, folks!  I told you I'd have a new update for you soon.  Seriously, you can't even believe how great of a time I'm having.  My days go a little bit like this: Wake up around 6:30, exercise (NOT hard), eat breakfast at the cafeteria with my new friends, go to interesting and amazing seminars all morning, eat lunch with my new friends (really good lunch, too), hang out on the balcony in the sunshine until the afternoon sessions get going again, go to interesting workshops, journal reviews, and more seminars in the afternoon.  Work a little bit with my group on our project, and then eat dinner and drink beer for the rest of the night.

The speakers have been amazing thus far.  They are thinking about biology questions in such new and creative and clever ways.  They also come sit with you at lunch an chat.  Yesterday I had lunch with 2 great researchers from Los Alamos national labs and the day before I had lunch with a guy from UCSD.  We talk science and it is SO fun.

The food here is amazing!!  It is so awesome to just show up, have some great meal, and then have none of the prep, thinking about it, getting stuff at the store, cleanup etc...

The scenery is unbelievable.  School is ringed by mountains, wildflowers everywhere, cool and refreshing in the mornings and evenings, warm and sunny during the day.

The people are SO nice!!  I LOVE the people that are at the school.  They make everything so much fun.  I want to take them all back to NYC with me.  Everybody is so friendly and knows different things.

Lastly, I've learned how to do things here that I never thought little old me would be able to do.  It's opened up this whole world of biology I was really only on the fringe of and made me change what I think I want out of science as a career.  It's excited me to have new big challenges and also given me confidence that I can be one of the people who actually does the stuff I thought only other, really smart people could do.

It's freaking awesome.

This evening we are going in to town to eat enchiladas at this place called Maria's.  Tomorrow we're going to go hike Baldy as a big group.  It will be a 14 mile hike round trip.  Starts at 10,000 feet and ends at something like 13,000.  After that, there is a beer crawl in downtown Santa Fe that some of us will go on.  Then on Sunday, we are all headed up in the direction of Taos to go to the hot springs.

Please nobody wake me up!  :-)

Peace,

J

Good morning from Santa Fe!

Hi guys, sorry for not posting this morning.  I didn't have time because I was leisuring over my breakfast for so long.  :-)  Usually when I leisure over breakfast I'm also leisuring over the blog, so it's taking some getting used to.

My first day was great!  We had a lot of seminars - lasting from 8:30am until almost 6pm.  We had a 2 hour break for lunch, though.  Many of the seminars were quite challenging to comprehend and there is so much that is new to me!!!  It's really fun, though, and I just want to learn everything immediately.  It's instilling me with such an exciting new desire to become good at a new skill - that skill being the mathematical modelling side of what I do now.  Yesterday evening the founder and chief mathematician of MathWorks came and gave a history of how he founded the company back in the 70's.  He's and old guy now, so hearing his story is truly incredible.  He got his degree in computer science back in the 60's.  He wrote the software Matlab as a tool for a class he needed to teach to undergraduate computer science majors at Stanford in the late 70's.  In the mid-80's, he and a friend bought a Compaq "portable" computer with their own pocket money and wrote the first iteration of Matlab (now their signature software off which everything else is based), in an A-frame near Palo Alto in California.  There was no venture capital, no investors, no employees.  Now MathWorks has thousands of employees and brings in almost a billion annually.  His pictures were hilarious - the computers were ridiculously cumbersome and the guys were so nerdly-looking!  (Hopefully my future children will not look back on my pictures like that).  MathWorks also programs things like anti-lock brakes for Chevrolet, to weapons, to energy applications, to aviation - it's pretty cool.  When he was done with his history, he gave us a tutorial on Matlab (which many of us use already - including myself).  The cool part was, that he gave the tutorial on this ANCIENT version of Matlab - the original version he wrote for his Stanford undergrads in the 60's.  It's not very user-friendly but it has some funny quirks that he included for laughs.  For instance, something I never knew was that if you type the prompt "WHY," the terminal gives you arbitrary, random, and hilarious answers to un-asked questions.

The food here is great - yesterday for lunch I had corn tamales with green chiles, salsa, and rice.  For dinner I had a gianormous salad with all the veggie fixings.  We stayed up out on the balcony drinking beer from approximately 7:30-midnight.  It was awesome getting to know everybody and make connections.  Everyone is nice & fun & brings a little something different to the table.  For instance, we have chemists, biologists, mathematicians, physicists, and computer scientists here so every conversation is new and fresh.

This morning I got up again at 6, went on a 4 mile walk (I really did not have it in my to run after 5 hours of beer the night prior).  I stretched for awhile in the field above and watched the sunrise.  Then I went and had my coffee & peanut butter toast at the cafeteria.  This afternoon I had jasmine rice with curried vegetables and a rice krispy treat.  No dishes + No prep + No cleanup + No planning + healthy + vegetarian = GLORIOUS.  Well, time for me to head back for my afternoon session.

Have a great day!!!!

peace,

J

Million dollar view from our dorm balcony.
Adobe sunset in the background from my window.
Little change of scenery for my morning run.

Another photo of the doggie dash - random!

Hi guys!  Well I'm here in Santa Fe at St. John's College.  After leaving Saturday night, I stayed the night in Albuquerque, got up really early and hit the road to Santa Fe.  It's crazy how these towns - even relatively big towns for the state - are just completely shut down at 7am on a Sunday.  NOBODY is out - they're like ghost towns.  When I got to Santa Fe, I hiked the 3.5 miles from the train station to SJC with my pack.  It was a nice hike that took me winding up a giant hill into the mountains.

When I got here, I checked in, explored a little, got my very nice dorm room, and waited for the mixer at 5.  I did some working out down on their little field and managed to get sunburned within 1 hour.  At 5 we had a mixer with local New Mexico brews and dinner.  I met a lot of new people and we went hiking around a bit also.  I went to bed around 9 (there's nothing really to do in the evening here - ESPECIALLY on a Sunday).

I didn't have the best night of sleep because the few college kids that are staying for the summer were playing Pink Floyd until 4 in the morning.  SERIOUSLY!?!? Go to bed!!!!!  I had the burning desire to go knock on all their doors this morning at 6.  "GOOD MORNING!!!"

I know I was just as obnoxious, but at least close your damn windows!

I woke this morning at 6 and went for a short run up a giant hill.  I didn't run for more than a half mile stretch at a time.  The altitude!  It's no joke!  It was lovely, though, and COOL & refreshing - like 60 degrees.  I watched the sunrise over the Sangre Cristo mountains and stretched.  I didn't even break a sweat.  I then attempted to find coffee and realized there is NOWHERE to get coffee prior to 7:30am on this campus.  WHAT KIND of place is this!?  7:30am!?  :-)  People here are just more chill I think - don't get up as early.

I'm just soaking in the natural beauty of this place.  Loving every second (but missing my pups & Brian).  Today is my first morning of seminars so I'm off for breakfast & coffee in a few minutes.

As a side note, there are now a lot more pictures of Bear and me from the Doggy Dash posted online.  You get to see when Bear puts on the brakes at the sight of the finish line chute :-)  Just click the link below and click on "enlarge" below each of the pictures you view.  They say "Proof" because they want you to buy them - but don't buy them - they're a rip-off!  When you're finished viewing a photo, just click on the "X" at the top right hand corner of the photograph.

 Before......
AFTER!!!

Doesn't she just look like the Belle of the Ball??!!

She had her teeth cleaned, ears cleaned, nails clipped, and she was bathed, conditioned, de-matted, clipped, and blow-dried.  She smells like oatmeal and roses.  And her coat is so glossy and shiny and soft - I haven't seen it like this since she had her puppy coat.  Her legs have been clipped back quite a bit, along with her belly, tail, paws, and mane.  She looks so adorable :-)

Wish I were going to enjoy her being so clean for more than a day!!  Oh well...I'm sure it won't be wasted on Brian.

Aww shucks - I leave tomorrow evening.  I didn't go in to work today.  Instead, I slept until Brian got up, walked the dogs, then went out for coffee with Sarah.  When I got home, I cleaned up, did all my laundry and packed for the week.  Also made sure I got all my software up and running and re-checked my flight confirmations.

I'm sooooo excited but also am starting to get a little anxious.  I'm anxious about leaving and being away from my pups & Brian for so long :-(  They make my life SO HAPPY.  I've never been separated from them for this long.  Come to think of it...I'm not sure I've been separated from them for more than a night (the recent wedding)....ever.

I'm going to miss my little nuggets.

Sofie is at the groomer now - getting all beautified because she had become such a little ragamuffin.  She really had gotten scraggly and her hair was too long.  I'll post a picture when she gets back.  I'll have before & after :-)  She was very happy to be there - they give her treats and she gets to sit in the blasting A/C with the other pups.

I'll still be posting while I'm away in New Mexico.  I want to keep you guys posted about the exciting things I'm going to learn and do.  There will most definitely be some sunrises and crazy scenery - hiking will be a must.  I wonder how far I can get on a bike!! :-)  (I don't have a credit card so I'm not a real grown up and can't rent a car).

Look out for some guest blogs from Brian, too, so you get updates on the 2 little dogs in the big Park.

Peace,

J

Do you ever have a morning where you wake up and instantly the tasks you must complete just seem completely and utterly insurmountable?  Not even the wrong side of the bed.  I wasn't cranky - just the thought of doing the things I needed to do seemed like it would take my entire day's worth of energy.  I totally had one of those mornings.

and I NEVER have those mornings!!

When my alarm went off this morning I was immediately overwhelmed by the thought of getting up, getting dressed, getting dog bags, and walking the dogs the whole way to the Park, all around the loop, getting the leaves and debris off them....yahta yahta you get the picture.

My brain:  "OMG I might as well be getting ready for a trip to the moon - I can't possibly manage this morning."

I snuggled the dogs for about 15 minutes and then I'll tell you what the answer is for those types of mornings.

ABROGATE all responsibilities and go out for breakfast.

Seriously.

And not one of those breakfasts where you grab it in a bag and then go eat it at your desk.

Go out and luxuriate and have people serve you tasty things.

I got up, walked the dogs around a few blocks, fed them, and then went to this place:

That's Gotham Coffee house.  It's 3 blocks away.  I went in, ordered a perfectly-brewed steaming hot cup of coffee and then one of these:

They have Balthazar pastries at Gotham.  Enough said.  If you know NYC, Balthazar is *the* spot to be.   They have a cocoa cookie that people lose their minds over.  The scone was so delicious and I just sat there in the blasting A/C cold and slowly enjoyed my scone crumble by crumble.

I am home now and the dogs will survive for one day of not having their big romp around in the Park.  You have no idea how much better I feel right now.  My attitude about the day has completely changed.  I'm ready to go.  RARING to go.

There's your lesson for the day - go luxuriate over breakfast somewhere and stare into space.  There is almost no bad mood it cannot immediately fix.

Peace,

J

I'm MELTING.

20 degrees cooler in Santa Fe.  I don't even care that there's storms....it's 20 degrees cooler

I am so lethargic today it's unreal.  It's as though the days upon days of heat have just cumulatively taken it out of me.  I trudged along in the Park today.  Felt as though I was barely able to keep my feet moving.  When I got home, I just went into the bedroom and layed on the bed in the A/C for about 10 minutes.  The dogs did the same.  After eating breakfast, I just haven't been able to wake up.  Ugh.  In the 5 minute walk to work the sun was just beating down on me.  I was sweating after 3 blocks.

Here's to making it through the day.

Before the start of the dash!

Hey everyone!  It's HOT HOT HOT in NYC today.

Check that out!  82 degrees at 9am!!  And...we have 60% humidity!!

Holy crow!

Yesterday morning I was just not feeling a 9.5 mile run - I just didn't have it in me.  So I took it easy, drank coffee in the A/C after our walk, and hung around.  After work I walked the pups with Brian and then he joined me for the first 4 miles of my run - which made it go by so much faster.  Before I knew it, we were high-fiving and he was headed back home to make dinner and I was off in the other direction for the remaining 5 miles of the run.  When I got home, he had a cold glass of coconut water (BEST for hydration & salt imbalance), and a glass of ice water.  He had made me a GIANT salad with parmesan, cherry tomatoes, and all sorts of different lettuces.  Perfect post-run dinner.  I woke up this morning feeling good - which I was a little concerned about b/c the run really took it out of me.  It was so hot on our walk, though, that when we got home, the pups were just drained.  They were panting so hard.

So, I did what any good human would do and put a small scoop of vanilla ice cream in with their kibble.

:-)

Have a great one!

Me and Bear just after we crossed the finish line at the Doggy Dash!  Bear was all wet because I'd just soaked him down with water from the wet towel I'm holding that they gave me.  I'm soaking wet because it was just that hot out :-)  There will be more pics in the days to come.

Happy Monday!

Good morning, folks!  Ok, ok I'm writing this post Sunday evening.  I have a long run tomorrow morning and I won't have time to blog after I walk the pups.

This weekend was an epic weekend for little dogs.  On Saturday we had to go get our mandatory vet check from the Animal Medical Center of NYC staff.  They had to ensure that Bear was fit and healthy to run.  We also picked up our sweet race swag - a doggy t-shirt (which Bear will wear approx. 1 time - when I put it on him when we got home and swooned over his adorable-ness), a NYC triathlon T shirt for me (which feels silly to wear since I didn't do a triathlon), a water bowl with Bear's name on it, poo bags, and doggie froyo.  The vet check/briefing took place at the Hilton on the Avenue of the Americas.  It was CRAZY because it was also where all of the people participating in the NYC triathlon were picking up their race information/bibs/getting de-briefed.  It was loud as hell in the dog room because every dog was making a ruckus (except Bear - he wasn't a fan - he was nervous).

After that, we went to agility class where we worked on weave poles.  It was a little hot - pups weren't into it.

For dinner I made vegetarian recipe #14: Moroccan Black Bean and Lentil burgers:

This was my first attempt at home-made veggie (vegan) burgers.  I am usually scared away from them because they have like 900 different ingredients and "ain't nobody got time for that."  This recipe was really, really simple though.  I really liked them and ate 2 with salad, however Brian and Sarah thought they tasted like cardboard.  They hated them and refused to eat them.  I fully endorse them (but I also really like the taste of lentils).  They're also great because you can have them around all week for lunch when your friends refuse to eat them.

1 cup of lentils - you can use whatever you've got around - I used a mixture of French Puy, brown, and red.  *Using different types adds some texture.  Red lentils are very soft, but french are quite hard and almost crunchy.
1 can of black beans (or whatever bean fits your fancy)
1.5 thinly sliced dried red chilis (makes for a spicy burger - reduce this if you don't love heat)
1 clove garlic - minced
1 small onion - chopped very thin
1 tablespoon coriander seed
1.5 tablespoons cumin
1/2 tablespoon yellow curry
salt
pepper

Boil your lentils for 20 minutes or until they're quite soft.  While they're cooking, wash your black beans in a colander in cold water.  When the lentils are done, strain them in the same colander with the black beans, running cold water over them to cool them.  Sauté your onion, garlic, spices, and chili peppers in a big stir-fry pan or wok.  When they are quite tender, turn off the heat, and mash them with a potato masher (put your back into it!). Then add your lentils and beans.  Mash to the texture you like.  When it's cool enough, form the mixture into patties (I got 6).  Cool them in the fridge for ~1 hour.  Fry them in a bit of oil - Note - they don't stay together all that well and are not suited for a bun.  They are an "eat alone" type of burger.  Top with a bit of tzatziki or some tahini and lemon (I did).

Today we also competed in the Doggy Dash!  We woke up at 5:30am this morning to get to the Tavern on the Green by 6:30am.  The race didn't start until 7:30 but we wanted to socialize and hydrate.  It was really fun and everybody was taking our picture.  I'll send you guys the website when the pictures are up.  The NYC Triathlon was also running this morning so the Park had an incredible atmosphere - fans and volunteers everywhere.  Camera crews galore.  It was very exciting.  Just as the last of the elite athletes entered the Park, our race started.  We ran on the same course as the triathletes, which was a little strange but ok because it wasn't very crowded. The course took us around the Park, up Harlem Hill in reverse, and then back on the East side.  We finished down Cat Hill and then wrapped around to finish at the same finish line as the triathletes (which seemed silly but was awesome because we were getting cheered for like we were famous).  I wet Bear down so that he would be cool and there was a mandatory 5 minute break at mile 2.5 where we sponged ice water on to the dogs and they had their temps checked by the vets to make sure they weren't over-heated.  Bear was fine - not even close whereas a lot of other dogs required longer than 5 minutes to continue on.

We came in 6th place overall and I was the second female finisher (out of about 30).  I was not running hard but I thought I was completely alone in terms of women.  At the last 0.5 miles, some girl and her german shepherd just came flying by us.  I wanted to be first female, but I wanted my little man to have fun and not get too hot, so I just let her fly by and finished in second.  At the end of the race, there was more doggy swimming pools, a medal for me and for Bear, doggy froyo, and off-leash playtime in the corral.  It was BY FAR the most fun race I've ever done.  Since the triathlon is such a big deal, you really got the feeling like you were doing some big important race.  The cheering and spectators made it really exciting.

At the end, all the dogs were still playing with each other - playing tug, chasing, wrestling - they were not tired at all.  I played fetch with Bear for a solid hour after we finished.  CHAMP!  I finished my race experience with a ridiculous amount of froyo topped with butterfingers and iced animal crackers.  BEAR GOT SOME - WHY CAN'T I???

Brian has prepared an excellent dinner for tonight.  Eggplant Parmesan for me and Chicken Parmesan for Sarah and him.  Also some home-made calimari with lemon as an appetizer - so lucky.

Sorry for rambling on and on and on.  Hope you didn't get too bored!!!

Have a great start to your week!  This will be my last week of posting before I'm gone in New Mexico for 3.5 weeks, so I'll try to keep things interesting.  Next week may be some guest blogging from Brian and also some from me - too - so you guys can catch up with the Santa Fe sunrises :-)

Peace!

Happy Friday!

Hi y'all!  This Friday morning was glorious.  Maybe you can see why?  They had THE GREAT LAWN all open for us to romp around on!  Ok, maybe it wasn't for us to romp around on.  Maybe it had a little something to do with the fact that this Saturday night is the Major League Baseball All-Star Charity Concert for Sandy Relief starring the NY Philharmonic Orchestra.  They were setting up for massive numbers of people to be on the lawn listening to great music.  However, it also meant that the doggies were very, very happy.  It was also just a smidgen cooler this morning and less humid than it's been of late.  It's been truly awful the past 2 days.  This morning there was at least a breeze and I didn't feel like I was mucking through a steam room.

The doggies could feel it too as they were much more active - chasing each other and other dogs.  They actually played today - as opposed to just trudging along behind me (which has been what Sofie does the last few days).

I'm already looking forward to Fall!

Yesterday was my last morning of teaching so today I'm back to full-time life in the lab - which is good - it's where I want to be.  We have a busy weekend coming up!  Potentially a date at Vitae tonight followed by agility and a meeting for the Doggie Dash tomorrow, and then the Doggie Dash for the NYC triathlon on Sunday!  Bear and I will be representing Good Dog, Tired Dog - our new side business.

Have a great weekend!  Catch you on Monday :-)

Peace,

Sometimes this little one doesn't get the same amount of attention anymore because Bear is so IN YOUR FACE.   She's still my top dog.  Love my little SofSof.

Long Over-DUE! The 4th of July, the wedding, and an overnight with grandma Edna

He was literally laying on the bathroom floor watching me do girly things like pluck my eyebrows.

I got a new dress for the occasion!
The bride's likeness cake-topper's were almost too cute to handle.  Ps.  the cake was incredible.  I had both chocolate + vanilla buttercream and a slice of vanilla with raspberry filling and vanilla buttercream.  Their cats are brothers in real life and look exactly like that and are named Squash and Einstein.

My 2 best friends and fellow bio majors from college.  Molly and Mike.  Molly is now at Physician's assistant school - she was my senior year roomie...we have had TOO MANY adventures...She used to spend her free time on call for a hotline that counsels women who are victims of domestic violence (just to give you an idea of the type of woman this chick is) Mike is a beautiful gay paleontologist of fossil fishes and educator of young (5-7 year old) scientists.  Both are super smart and wonderful, incredible, inspiring people.

 Molly and me!
The absolutely beautiful brides:  Katie on the left and Megan on the right.

Alexis, a GREAT friend from college has been in Singapore for 3 years since we graduated and was BACK! (she was a bridesmaid)
 Wife & Wife!
 vows
View from the 50th floor of the Bell Atlantic building.  Sunset happening in the top right corner.

View of City Hall from the bar we went to after the wedding (and got extremely drunk at).

Brian and I during the dinner.

Hi y'all.

It's been awhile.  Sorry about that.  It's been a crazy couple of days.  Since returning from the wedding I've been getting up at the crack of dawn to get ready for each day.  I've been also getting a brand-spanking-new project off the ground in the lab.

To give you an idea:  I've been teaching a molecular biology class for NYC high-schoolers in the mornings from 8-noon and then going to the lab from approximately noon to like...ok not kidding like 9 at night.  Shit's been crazy.  Pardon my french.

We left with the little dogs on Thursday morning.  Got to Chatham, NJ.  Pool-partied it up at our friend Geoff's house (ok, his parent's house...none of us are rich enough for pools yet).  Dogs galore, people galore, beer galore.  Sofie literally swam for 6 hours.  When she got tired, people in the pool just stuck her on a floaty mat and she floated around for awhile before jumping back in.  That dog is a WATER RAT I swear.  Bear mostly watched from the sideline and felt nervous.  He also hung around quite a while underneath where the mini hotdogs were being consumed by Geoff's younger sister and her friends....hmmmmmmmm......When we got home we were BEAT from being in the sun all day.  It was great.  On Friday we ran around with Brian's mom - they helped me pick out my pretty dress at Anthropologie and we also got some baby shower gifts (which were so adorable they made me want an infant immediately), and then Brian got some fancy socks - apparently brightly colored socks with suits are SO IN RIGHT NOW.

We barbequed that night (veggie kebobs for me), and some burgers for them.  Also some pasta salad - mayo-less for me because I just can't have mayo...I just can't do it.

Saturday we got up and went to Philly.  I'm sorry...I will not go in to every detail.  You can kind of see from the pictures.  We got to spend hours with my friend Molly getting ready and drinking wine like old times (when we were single and getting ready to go out on main street in Manayunk - only then we were drinking Bud Lights ;-)) She helped me pick my shoes and everything.  I advised her on hairstyles. The ceremony was beautiful.  I was a mess.  Brian was even weepy (he and Katie are very close whereas Megan and I have literally been friends since almost the first day of school at SJU).  Both sets of parents walked both girls down the aisle to give them away to one another.  It was very sweet.  Their vows were very personal, poetic, spiritual, and well-thought out.  After the ceremony there was a cocktail hour with hors' d' oureves (that can't possibly be spelled right), and an old boardwalk-style photo booth to take pictures in with props and stuff.  There was a full sit-down dinner with the toasts, followed by dancing, wedding cake, profiteroles, and finally...at the end of the night...Philly soft pretzels ...a cute and very "philly" touch.  Mike told me the next day that I literally force-fed him a cream puff.

We went out to a bar afterwards and got even drunker/danced even more.  The next morning Molly & Mike, Brian and I all went for brunch (a FABULOUS brunch I might add - seriously).  Meg and Katie were off to Antigua for their honeymoon.  I got to hang with Molly and Mike for longer and then it positively HURT to say goodbye.  It still kind of hurts.  The whole perfection of the weekend should never have ended.  I can't even believe how nostalgic I felt for Philly.  Every little turn was bringing back happy memories.

When we got back to Jersey, we were reunited with our 2 littles furry loves who were graciously watched by grandma Edna (I know...I'm a nutcase).  I'm so grateful that Brian's mom was so happy to watch them - it's so much easier to leave them when I know they're somewhere where they are loved and well taken-care of.

We hung with Maggie and Edna for a bit and chatted over sandwiches before heading exhaustedly back to the city.

It was a beautiful thing to watch 2 people who love and cherish each other so much finally get to openly proclaim their love and fidelity for one another in front of all of their family and friends.  These two have been together for almost 5 years - lived together for 3 and have seen each other through all sorts of ups and downs.  I know they will make wonderful parents someday and will always look out for one another.  They're also pretty successful ladies.  Katie is a Project Manager at a market research firm and Megan is a 3rd grade teacher at a Charter School.  They've got a sick apartment with great views in the Art Museum District and have toured all over Europe together.   Feeling inspired by them.

It's back to the grind today and yesterday.  I'm getting back into it...slowly.  :-)

And just in case you need proof of how sleepy we were on the train ride back to NYC:

Sleepy, sleepy runk.

Sit tight, y'all.

The little dogs are busy this week teaching a molecular biology class to high-schoolers from NYC.  Posts will be later in the day due to this new routine.  Next week will be back to normal!  :-)

See you later this afternoon.
