Signs of Spring

Tuesday, February 21st, 2012
Central Park East - 6:55am-7:15am

Good morning!  Just now when I was typing my "Tuesday February 21" thing, I started typing October 15th.  That's weird don't you think?  Why would my brain think October and why would my brain then think it's the 15th? I wish I could have better captured the Blue Jay party that I walked in on this morning in the Park.  There were about 4 of them flying back and forth from a tree to the ground to eat some birdseed.  I just love Blue Jays - so striking.  Every time they flew to the ground, Sofie charged in at them.  This picture was the best I could do :(

Anyway, after my nice easy day yesterday, I'm back at it this morning.  I tried to avoid it all Winter long, and I was beginning to think I'd make it, but it was not to be.  What am I talking about?  THE COLD!  I had a brief encounter with a horrible virus right around when my Dad came to visit (sorry, Dad for the super non-fun weekend), but aside from that I've had nothing.  Now...this is fairly unusual for me.  I mean, I tough it out, but I'm usually that person with serial colds all winter long starting in November and ending in February.  I'm just immunologically challenged.  Well this Winter I thought I'd make it, but nope.  I woke up with it this morning.

In contrast to my dismay at the cold this morning, I remembered that there is no class all week long because it's recruitment week!!!  HOORAY!  Seriously, that is fantastic.  The interviewees come on Wed., and leave on Friday.  On Thursday evening I am taking a group of them out for Mexican food at a place called Ofrenda (near NYU in the East Village I think).  It's hard to believe that last year at this time, I was a member of this group.  Anxiously awaiting the chance I couldn't believe I got to interview at a place like Cornell.  (I still kind of can't believe I'm here).

Have a wonderful, wonderful day!

Ah, President's Day

Monday, February 20th, 2012
The House!

Good morning!  Happy President's Day :)  That doesn't mean much to anyone if they don't work anymore - but it's pretty sweet for those of us who do!  I should clarify - I don't have off today.  I'm actually going to go in after I post this.  I did, though, take my sweet time this morning.  Brian has off so we got up around 8 - rather than the usual 6:30 - and went to the Park.  It was packed with dogs!  Crazy busy.  We got some coffee at the Kerbs Boathouse down by the Conservatory Pond.  It was hopping with people getting breakfast and eating outside with their doggies.

After we got back, Brian made me the breakfast you see above while I was showering and getting ready :)  I'm luckyyyy.  Short-stack of Kodiak Cakes with butter and syrup.  I was in Carb-heaven - they were even better than they look in the pictures.  Sofie likes to sit on the arm of the couch next to the table so that she can be at eye level with the food.  I gave her a little taste of syrup once I'd finished.

Now I'm off to work (It's 10:30).  I have lab meeting at 12:30, then don't really have a whole lot to do until 4pm, when I'll get ready for the experiments that I'll do this week.  When you work in a bacteriology lab, Mondays are usually for inoculating (growing) the bacteria that you'll use in the experiments for the remainder of the week.  Other than that I'll just be preparing the plates (nutrient-rich gelatin in little round plates) for the bacteria to grow on during the experiments that I'll do.  This means that I should do some reading, but more likely I'll read a paper, then read blogs online for the rest of the time.

Happy President's Day to me!

Have a wonderful President's Day yourself!

Happy FRIDAY!

Friday, February 17th, 2012
Central Park East - 7:15am

Good morning!  I'm afraid you're going to be bombarded with Daffodil pictures for a short while - I just love the little clusters of them coming up.  They remind me of little miniature forests.  The thing I love most about these Springtime flowers is that they are little strongholds of green and appetizers for what is to come amongst the starkness of Winter.  The picture below the Daffodils reminds you what it actually looks like right now - stark, barren, wet winter.

It was a bit wet today so was a little more empty than yesterday, but still significantly more people than have been out of late (yay Spring!).  We saw our friend Logan (the flat-coated retriever) with his lady.  Logan is the sweetest, most rambunctious, well-meaning (can dogs be well-meaning?), dog.  He and Sofie liked to play together until...the incident.  Seriously, she would go running up to him, then cower and be submissive, then they would smell each other, and then finally she would go running around in circles as fast as she could go, and he would chase her.  If he wouldn't chase her fast enough, or wanted her to chase him, Sofie would run and bark in his face.

Then, one day, he bopped her on the head with his paw.  It wasn't too rough.  It was enough to knock her off her feet and into a nearby fence.  She yelped, cowered, and ran under my legs.  He ran over as if to say, "Wait, no, sorry!  Keep running, I'll be better!"  But no - she was not having it.  Now, he comes to greet her almost every morning.  He jumps around in play stance, he licks her face, and ...nothing.  She stands stark against my legs.  Doesn't move.  Doesn't sniff him.  Nothing.  If he doesn't leave her alone she starts to whimper.

The most embarrassing thing about this, is that he is such a nice dog and his lady is so pleasant and always makes conversation with me.  She feels very bad that Sofie seems to be afraid of him now, and so she tries to give Sofie treats to placate her.  I think we're probably reading too much into these doggie "emotions" and trying to assign human ones to them, but it's still kind of an awkward situation.

Poor Logan, he's lost his girlfriend.

Have a fantastic FRIDAY!

Can't believe it's already THURSDAY!

Central Park East - 7:25am

Good morning!  I have to say, today just really feels like Spring.  It was warm enough that I didn't need to wear a hat or gloves - that's a first for like...the whole Winter.  I felt so unburdened without being bundled to the max!  It's definitely getting lighter out at the time when I leave.  Before, when I left the apartment sometime around 6:20-6:30, it was pitch black out.  Now, when I wake up even earlier than that, there's already weak little rays of light coming through the blinds.  It makes it much easier.  Aside from that, there are so many bird songs in the Park!  This morning I saw 3 Blue Jays.  I always forget how stunning Blue Jays are - they really are quite breathtaking.  I had a very slow walk because I kept trying to get close enough to one of the Blue Jays to take a picture, but every time it looks like I'm focusing on something, Sofie notices, wants to get in on the fun, and scares the bird away before I can get a shot.  She's a terrible hunter - not stealthy at all.

There have also been a lot more people out this week.  It's nice to have the Park to your self sometimes, but it's also very nice to see and speak with the same people every day.  There's a woman in the Park with a hound dog also named Sophie.  She LOVES my Sofie.  This morning she asked for the name of my breeder because she and her husband want to get a Cavalier and they've "never seen a cuter, more friendly one than Sofie."  I told her gladly but she better not think she's getting the pick of this Spring's litter - that's for me and Brian :)  (Yes, we are planning on another for the late Spring).  Yes, if you're wondering, I am crazy.  But I'm free to make my own crazy choices - that's the beauty of living in Amerrikuh.  Life is great with 1 dog, so the goodness can only be multiplied with 2 dogs :)

Finally, see the picture above?!  The ultimate sign of Spring has arrived! The daffodils are coming up!  Daffodils are my 2nd favorite flower behind Tulips - also wonderful Springtime flowers.

Seize the day!!

Good morning Wednesday!

Wednesday, February 15th, 2012
Central Park East - 6:55am

Good morning!  This is a shot from the Conservatory Pond up at Mary Tyler Moore's picture window.  Mary (we're on a first-name basis), has the penthouse and just above the middle window of this building is where the famous Red-tail hawk lives.  You can kind of see the big nest above the window.  I always find myself looking up at these buildings, and looking into the windows of the brownstone houses between Madison and 5th Ave and wondering about who is in there.  Lots of times I can see into the kitchen and there is a cook in there, fixing coffee and breakfast for whomever lives there.  I often walk along and wonder what the cook is making - does she (it's almost always a Latina) decide what to make or does the boss tell her?  What's the good in having a cook if you don't get some creativity in your meals.  It'd be kind of silly to pay someone to make you instant oatmeal or pour your bowl of cereal every day.  Also - you really don't have time to put some tablespoons of coffee grounds into your coffeemaker?  How busy are you?!

My other thoughts are usually about what is going on in the big tall apartment buildings on the Park.  When there's a light on I catch myself wondering about what the person is doing in there.  Are they looking out like Simba from Pride Rock - "All of this is yours, Simba, because you will be King someday..."  Like is that what they're thinking when they open their blinds?  Or does their apartment become like every body elses.  Just a box with walls to fill up with your stuff.  Angora slippers and a silk robe after day 2 of ownership are just your slippers and robe.  Your stuff doesn't hold any special place in your heart - how could it?  There are only a few things that matter to each of us - everything else just sort of fills the space up and becomes white noise.

Think about what it is that you actually derive pleasure from standing and looking at in your place.  I can tell you, there are a collection of very few things I actually care about and that I admire.  Here is the list of things that I find beautiful in my home - as far as I'm concerned someone could rob me and take everything else and I wouldn't really care.

1.  The framed photograph I gave Brian for his birthday last year - it's professionally framed (it's a beautiful job) - and it's a photo Brian took when we were atop Mt. Cadillac in Maine on our camping trip.  It's of the sunrise over the Atlantic Ocean.

2.  The cover art on the favorite books I've read sitting in my bookshelf.  I like to stand there and look at them.

3.  The little lamp and fresco my Dad got for me 2 sequential Christmases.  In particular I love the oil lamp.  I pick it up maybe 3 times a week when I'm sitting at my desk working to admire the colors.

4.  The Czech glass set my Mom and Dad brought back from Prague.

5.  The Corkboard in the kitchen with all of Brian and my ticket stubs and cards and stuff that signifies where we went and what we saw - the memory board.  I often stand in there and eat snacks and stare at the board - remembering all the fun times we've had and planning what we should do next.

6.  The framed photographs I have up behind the couch of my trip to Africa.

7.  Brian's San Francisco - Rodo-boulanger le ciel de graciela poster.  I don't know why I like this but I have always stared at it - kind of odd.  The weird thing about it is that I like to type out the letters on my fingers when I look at it.  To me - the poster says home - the home that the two of us have together.

8.  The lavender lacquered wooden box that I keep important things that Brian got engraved with my initials.  More than looking at it - I like the feel of it.

What is important to you?  What would you miss the most if it were gone tomorrrow?  Email me or post in the comments because I am curious and would like to write a post about it.

Have a wonderful day!!!

Central Park East - 7:05am

Lookin' pretty bleak out there folks!  Can I say I'm ready for Spring to start?  I keep trying to remind myself that it's better to be bundling up than walking in 95 degree heat with 60% humidity at 6am (which is what it will be like soon enough)!

Have a great day.

Good morning, Monday!

Monday, February 13th, 2012
Central Park East - 7:05am

Good morning!  The picture above is what Sofie looks like most mornings because she stops to chew up and eat little pieces of sticks all along our walk.  Twas a cold one out there this morning.  3 layers, gloves, a hat, and a scarf were just not enough.  When the doormen called their hellos to me on my way back to the apartment, my lips were too cold to respond with an intelligible "good morning!"  Instead it sounded more like "gh, mrning."

It wasn't just because of the temperature - it was windy, too.  Either way, there were lots of people out so Sofie saw most of her dog friends.  It doesn't make any sense what day people are out and when they're not.  Anyway - tonight is the Westminster Dog Show so I'm showing my true crazy dog lady tendencies when I say, I plan to stay in all night, fore go working out (Mondays I usually rest anyway), and watch the show with Sofie and Brian.  Sofie already told me she heard the Cavalier is expected to be Best in Show and she thinks it's rigged if it turns out any other way.  She's such a supremacist - it's embarassing!

Anyway, enough of my silliness.  It's time for breakfast.

Have a wonderful day!
