Central Park East - 7:05am

Good morning, good morning.  This morning Sofie found a wonderful piece of stick that she was on a mission to get home to the apartment so she could chew it into bits.  Unfortunately for her/fortunately for me right after this picture was taken a gigantic golden doodle named Rufus came and took it out of her mouth and ran away with it.  Rufus' owner was a flamboyant gay man who saw this as a grave injustice against little Sofie.  He reprimanded and scolded Rufus while Rufus ran happily around with the knot of wood.  Sofie ran after him, hoping he would drop it, but he did not.  Apparently it was a great knot of wood.  We humans would know nothing about that.  Rufus' owner exclaimed to me how sorry he was that Rufus had committed this atrocity to my poor sweet little dog and I told him it was quite all right and that I would have had to take it from her at some point any way.  Sofie promptly forgot about it after about 5 minutes when she realized that the dirt pile she likes to eat out of was coming up.

Have a wonderful day!

ps.  the ducks were back in the pond today.  What is up with that?  Aren't they a bit early?

Back in NY

Monday, January 30th, 2012
Central Park East Crossover - 7:00am

Good morning!  I'm back in NYC after spending my weekend on a winter get-away in Killington, Vermont.  I went up with a bunch of my grad school friends for a weekend of skiing and such.  It was a fantastic time.  My 3 friends Shashi, Kihyun, and Ritama (they are all fellow Immunology first years) all roomed together.  We left at 5am on Saturday morning and drove for about 4.5 hours to get to Killington.  Most everyone slept but I was wide awake - reading about Catherine the Great and watching the absolutely spectacular sunrise.  I took some pictures but the bus was moving so they aren't great :(  So we got to Vermont - grabbed some coffee and dropped our stuff at the lodge, then immediately went to the mountain to ski.

I was a little bummed that my closest friends were all taking the beginner lesson but I found some other friends in the biochemistry program that I know from biochem last semester and skiied with them all day.  It was a laughably bad day on the mountain.  It was so warm that the snow was all melty and choppy and covering up just a terrible sheet of ice.  By mid-afternoon most of the slopes were sheer ice because all the snow that they were blowing had been whisked off by skiiers not knowing how to ski on the ice (they exacerbate the situation because they slide down in the only non-icy parts and push all the snow off the only good spots just sliding down).  I still enjoyed myself because a mountain is better than no mountain, right?

That night we went out for dinner at this little spot in Rutland - I'm used to the city - it was nothing to write home about but the beer was really cheap (2.50 to 3$ a beer! As opposed to the 6-8 you'll spend here).  We stayed up that night and watched the shining with Dane (first year Immunology guy).  None of my Indian or Korean friends had seen it so they were scared shitless & it was very entertaining.

The next day was much better on the mountain - better conditions so I had a great time.  I spent the morning kind of teaching my friend Kihyun but then met up with my biochem friends at the end of the day to do some more challenging runs.

It was a great weekend & lots of fun - but I've learned that skiing is just not the same without my Mom.  We are the best match for skiing because we get up at 6 am and go all day (they got up at 8:30 and to the mountain by 10:30) - eat massive breakfasts w/ lots of coffee (they wanted toast and black tea) - we ski hard and don't take breaks (constant coordinating to go in to the lodge) - and Mom is just a damn good skiier.  I actually thought to myself - I don't think I'll ever go on a ski trip again without my Mom!  (Obviously we're also always on a far better mountain, which helps, too).

Today is back to the grind - got up for a beautiful morning in the park with Sofie.  Glad to be back to another week with Brian and little Sof.

Have a great day!

The Living Room w/ her new presents - 6:15am

Good morning!  Another weird day at the park.  It was so dark this morning, that I was actually somewhat unnerved having Sofie run off her leash because I could barely see her.  There was no one out - yet again.  We saw the same guy we always see with the Afghan hound named Lily (whom never minds him), and the Rottweiler named Toby, and we saw the asian girl with the beautiful pointers, and the man with the rambunctious vislza named Hector.  Other than that - there was no one out.  Probably because it was raining a bit.  It was so awkwardly warm today, that I had to take off all my cold-weather gear and carry it in my coat b/c I was sweating.  I ended up even being warm with my sweatshirt on and eventually tied it around my waist.  I was wandering central park in JANUARY in my t-shirt.  Its just not right.  50 degrees at 6:30 am and a high of 60....in JANUARY.

Enjoy your day!

Happy Birthday, Sofie!

Thursday, January 26th, 2012
Central Park East - 7:05 am

Good morning & Happy Birthday to my little Sofie!  She is 1 today - not that she has any idea about that :)  I thought I'd post a picture of the dirt hole she likes so much.  She digs in this one spot every day and even with the remaining snow pile, she dug through to get the delicious dirt below.  When she gets to this spot she digs furiously and then smashes her little face against the dirt and eats big mouthfuls.  I have no idea why.  Sorry for all of the horizon pictures lately.  There are 2 reasons for this: first, it is winter so there is not much living for me to take pictures of right now, and second, when the light stays low for the entire walk, horizons are pretty much the only things that photograph well.  Once it starts getting warmer there will be some more variety to the photos.  For now you'll have to enjoy the sunrises at a time when sunrise doesn't mean - "Oh no! It's about to become 100 degrees!"  ha ha.

Anyway - have a great day!

Photo drought!

Wednesday, January 25th, 2012
Central Park East - 7:15am

This is what happens when there isn't enough light for the camera.  The shutter speed becomes very slow and even with the steadiest hand, you can't control blurriness and get a good shot.  It was very dark out this morning - even later after the sun had come up.  There was a big cloud cover with little patches where it looked like the sun would eventually come through.

Again - another oddly empty day in the park.  This whole week has been very quiet.  It's been nice, actually.

As for me, I'm just trying to get through the week to this weekend!  I'm going up to Killington, Vermont to go skiing and snow-shoeing with some of the grad school friends.  Going to be so funnn!!!!!  Expect lots of pictures from that (hopefully).

Have a fantastic day!

No pics today

Good morning, good morning.  There are no pictures today because - I was inexplicably awake at 6am this morning (not tired - just awake weirdly).  I decided to just start my walk early and as a consequence it was too dark for the whole walk to take any pictures.  The weirdest part about this awake at 6am business is that when I went to turn my alarm off, I realized I had never set it.  So I didn't know I didn't set my alarm but my subconscious did.  Either that or it was just a coincidence.

New doggies this morning in the park - the 6am crew is a totally different bunch.  Sofie met a bunch of new friends - including a beagle named Spot that also likes to chew bits of sticks up on his walk.  If I never mentioned it before, Sofie picks up little chunks of sticks throughout the whole walk so that she can chomp them up and eat them.  I have no idea - perhaps they taste good.  In autumn she likes to eat the acorns.  Dad told me that acorns taste bitter (I don't know why he would know a thing like that) - and that Native Americans used to use them to make a sort of bitter flour (again - don't ask me how he knows that).  I suppose Sofie just is a weird little dog that will try and eat just about anything.  We also met a golden retriever named Sophie in the park today, also.

Today is the first day of classes officially starting back up for the fall.  After this semester I only have 1 actual semester of classes left next year.  Yay!

Have a great day!

Winter Wonderland

Monday, January 23rd, 2012
Central Park East - 6:55am

Good morning, good morning.  This morning was one of those rare mornings when you just can't wipe the grin off your face.  It brought me back to those childhood games you play during winter snow-days with all the neighborhood kids.  You know, one of those games where you all get together after a big, snow-day type breakfast, and you play some sort of imaginary game where you hide, and seek, and the game sometimes takes on a bit of magic because you're still little.

Well, to be sure, this morning wasn't perfect.  Sofie didn't want to get up - I had to drag her out of her crate.  She is very sleepy some mornings and desperately needs her rest.  Oddly, I sort of sprang up the minute my alarm went off - I suppose I slept well last night.  It was sort of misting a little, but not enough for it to be bothersome.  To the contrary, the misting created this effect where the sky felt a little lower.  The buildings surrounding the park were very much blocked out from view because of this.  The top image is what I saw when I first entered the park this morning - soft snow, and very, very quiet.  The snow was packed because of all the sledders this weekend so it was easy to walk on.  Snow also lightens up the area in sort an eerie way when it's early in the morning.  This coupled with the fact that you couldn't really see the buildings and that absolutely NO ONE was out (I mean no one - I didn't see one person until I got to the backside of my walk) made it feel a bit magical.  It wasn't very cold, nor was it windy.  Sofie's joy and rambunctiousness from romping in the snow was contagious.

Because of all this, I felt very much like I was in that early scene in The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe.  I'm sure you know this part of the book but it's when the littlest girl pushes her way through the all the fur coats in the wardrobe and finds, to her amazement, that the wardrobe is magic and just keeps. on. going.  She falls out at the end into the soft glow of one lamppost.  It's completely quiet, because of all the snow, and she's surrounded by evergreens.  This is when she meets the faun named Mr. Tumnus, who takes her to his cave to speak secretly and have tea and treacle.  The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe epitomizes childhood.  It epitomizes those snow-days when you don't have to go to school, and you're out in your back yard - in our case we would be out back in the field.  You carve tunnels into the snow and make believe that you're in some different wintry world with talking animals and perhaps dark forces that you must evade and destroy.  It's such an unexpected treat to have a morning that brings you back to those days.

First Snow of the year!!!

Saturday, January 21st, 2012
Central Park East - 8:15am

First snow of the year!!!  It was magical and beautiful in Central Park.  A few people were out early with their dogs but it was actually still snowing pretty hard (you can't tell from the pictures) so it wasn't exactly conducive to walks yet.  The dogs that were out were going NUTS playing and running around in the snow.  Sofie was very, very rambunctious and loved the snow.  It was her first snow, too.  On the walk back, her paws got a little cold and she was lifting them up and running 3 legged.  Brian picked her up and carried her until her paws got warmed up and then she was fine.

There were already lots of people out sledding.  We bought some extra good sausage from the Brooklyn Kitchen last night and so the next step on the morning to-do list is to make scrambled eggs with sausage and a big pot of coffee :)  Delicious.

Our trip to the Brooklyn Kitchen last night was a great success!  It was easy to get there.  The F train downtown to 14th and Union Sq.  Then took the L a few stops over into Brooklyn and walked about 5 blocks (mind you - Brooklyn blocks are A LOT smaller than Manhattan blocks).  The Brooklyn kitchen prides itself on using only NY state meat that has been raised on small farms and that adhere to a strict philosophy on human treatment of their animals.  They also are artisan sausage makers, carry all sorts of incredible cheeses, coffee, and grow their own herbs on the premecies.  They have everything you need to take on any kind of cooking adventure - cheesemaking, pickling, sausage-making, you name it.

So we got there and went into a separate room for the cooking class.  It was like a big barn with exposed brick on all sides.  There was a huge chalkboard up on one wall with all of the classes for the month listed (from pickling to pretzel making to Italian cooking, to pig butchering).  Then there were metal snowflakes in the shapes of cooking utensils all over the other wall.  In the middle of the room was a long table for everyone to eat at - with sparkling water and about 10 bottles of red wine.  Against the other wall was where the cooking was done. We were there for the Tour d' Italia class as were about 5 or 6 additional couples around Brian and my ages.  The instructor is Italian and teaches every other month.  She picks traditional recipes from different regions of Italy for each class.  This class featured a traditional meal from Milan.  We made pork tenderloin wrapped in pancetta - braised with rosemary, olive oil, and stock.  For our other dish we had Risotto a la Milanese.  To make this, we used butter, white wine, stock, and...the secret ingredient that really grossed me out at first.....bone marrow!  It really irked me scraping the marrow out of the bone, but when it went into the hot pan it dissolved like butter.  To finish off the risotto we added a bunch of fresh parmiggiano cheese and Saffron to make it turn yellow.  It was freaking amazing.  Seriously.  I forgot all about the marrow once I was eating it.  Then we had a big spinach & arugula salad on the side with mustard dijonettte.  Then we all sat down together and had this fantastic meal and drank every bottle of wine.

We brought home some 2 year aged Vermont cheddar, some breakfast pork sausage, a little porcelain cream container in the shape of a dinosaur, and a home-dried rawhide for Sofie.  (She ate it in about 2 minutes).

Have a wonderful day!!

HAPPY FRIDAY!!!

Friday, January 20th, 2012
Central Park East - 7:15am

Good morning!  There was another beautiful sunrise this morning - 3 in a row - but I thought it would be overkill to document it for you...again.  So, in lieu of that I thought I'd show you the back of the Met.  The Metropolitan Museum of Art, that is.  For the longest time I thought this was the NY conservatory of music (I'm so embarassed that I told people that).  I know now for sure that this is one side of the Met because I was in there.  The hall just inside those windows is filled with ancient Greek sculptures.

This morning Sofie made lots of friends because there were tons of tree-trimmer guys in the Park.  Maybe they take down some of the excess branches when there's going to be snow, so that the trees are protected from having downed limbs?  Either way - they were everywhere.  So a bunch of them heard me yell, "Sofie! Come here." So they started yelling for Sofie and she looked up all crazy-eyed and ran to them as though they were long lost friends.  Then they were whistling for her and giving her pets and such.  She was wiggling out of control and trying to kiss faces and all such.  Then she didn't want to leave them - but when I got out of sight she ran to me.  It was very cute.

I havn't been to BagelWorks since I've been back for X-mas b/c I've been trying to eat less carbs - but today is a BagelWorks day!  I'm going to go get a good NYC everything bagel toasted with veggie cream cheese and a big coffee.  It's going to be soooo goooood I can't wait!

This evening we are going to do my X-mas gift to Brian, which was a trip to the Brooklyn Kitchen (down in Williamsburg, Brooklyn) to do this big group cooking lesson to learn to make some good Italian dishes with some extra good wine.  I've never done one of these before but I'm really excited because I think the food is going to be realllllly good.  And I don't get to go to Brooklyn too often so it'll be nice to get out off of Manhattan for once!

Have a great weekend!!

Another Beautiful Sunrise

Thursday, January 19th, 2012
Central Park East - 7:25am

Good morning, good morning!  Sorry to be repetitive but it was just another spectacular sunrise today, so I had to take advantage.  See, even Sofie is awestruck by it!  An uneventful day in the Park - probably because it was so bitter cold this morning.  It was only 19 degrees.  Honestly I was cold in my house before I left.  I was dreading going out there b/c I knew it would be so cold, but once I got moving I warmed up a bit.  It still wasn't the most pleasant.  Either way - Sofie met another little 7 mo. old boy Blenheim cavalier that she got to play with for awhile.  She likes this weather - it must be nice to have a long furry coat at this time of year.

Have a wonderful day!!

Sunrise

View of the East side from the Central Park 72nd st. crossover
6:50am (top) and 7:35am (bottom)

Good morning!  Had a beautiful morning in the Park today!  It was clear-skied enough that the sunrise was incredible.  It also wasn't too cold - about 40 degrees - and even though the weather said there was a wind advisory, I thought it was very pleasant.  Sofie met her friend Logan, the flat-coated retriever, on both parts of her walk.  He is such a sweet and gentle dog.  I always thought flat-coated retrievers were basically just black golden retrievers, but I found out today that they're actually a mix between an Irish Setter and a Newfoundland.  Logan's owner is a trainer and so Logan is very well-behaved and sweet.  He does the thing where he just leans against you to get attention.  Sofie and him always chase one another around as fast as they can.  Today he knocked her over and she whimpered and yelped a little, but then was right back at it running here and there.  She's full of drama some days.

Central Park East & the house - 7:35am

Good morning!  Sorry no post yesterday.  It was my first day in lab and Brian had off for MLK day so he walked Sofie instead.  This morning I'm back on my routine, though!  Up at 6:30am and to the Park by 6:50am.  It felt good to get up after sleeping in til 7:30 for the last 2 weeks.  6:30 just trumps 7:30 - for reasons I've already explained.  I saw this awesome plaque in the Park this morning - I love that quote by written by Shakespeare for...Hamlet?  I also thought I'd post a picture of Brian in his brand, spanking new running tights that I got him for X-mas :)  Fitting picture pair, eh?  ha ha.

Anyway, make today a great day!

Ferris Bueller's Day Off

Friday, January 13th, 2012
10:30am-4pm

Hello friends!  There was no blog this morning because....well.....I slept in this morning.  Yesterday was my Immunology Final and up until yesterday I've been holed up in my apartment with Sofie studying.  Well today I slept in (until like 9:30), then I drank a half a pot of coffee and...I'll let the pictures tell you the story of my day :)

The day started in the place where all excellent days start - Central Park.  I think today was the epitome of an ice cold-ice blue winter day.  East coast winters are: stark trees, chapped faces, hands, and lips, bitter-nasty wind (that these pictures aren't quite conveying) with a gorgeous icy blue sky backdrop.  It flurried most of the day.
I have a beloved Ice Cream, too.  She found this wonderful stick in the Park and proceeded to carry it all the way back to the apartment.  Once she finds a good stick, she is no longer sniffing around here and there.  Instead, she is on a mission.  The mission is to get the stick back to the apartment so she can chew it to bits.  So she pulls and pulls all the way back and then when we get to the door, I have to take it from her.  I always feel terrible, but she gives me no choice - she rips it to shreds and makes a terrible mess if I give her the chance.
Once I got home, I got all dressed and put together and hoofed it up to the Guggenheim Museum on 89th and 5th Aves.  I wish I could have captured all of the museum - it was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.  It's set up as a tower of concentric circles leading upwards with annex gallery offshoots to display the collections.  By designing the museum as concentric circles, Wright meant to contrast to the sharp and exact squares of the NY city blocks, and the rectangular shape of both Central Park and Manhattan as a whole.  (I learned that from the audio tour).

There was a huge mobile hung in the center of the museum displaying ALL of the life's work of Maurizio Cattelan.  He was a satirist of sorts and was known for making extremely life-like sculptures - many of his pieces are political in nature.  He used his art to express his feelings about the abuse of power.  Also, many of his sculptures are somewhat disturbing and overtly morbid.  For instance, he had a sculpture of a young boy hanging by a rope from his neck, and a woman nailed by the hands face down on a white sheet.  There were also a lot of stuffed yellow labrador retreivers - maybe about 4 or so, and 5-6 horses/donkeys.  I really liked the oversized cat skeleton for some reason.  There was also a sculpture of Pope Benedict lying on a red carpet with a rock that had fallen on him.  He used this installation piece to both celebrate his life's work and announce his retirement from the art world.

The real belle of the ball that I was there to see, however, was the Vasily Kandinsky exhibit.  I loved the exhibit because I enjoy color and the way he thinks about art is very interesting.  I couldn't take any photographs in that exhibit, but I found the two I like the most on the Guggenheim's website. Disclaimer - his pieces are large and these just don't do them justice AT ALL - I just mean for you to get an idea of what I'm talking about.

Kandinsky was, I believe, the first artist truly to achieve abstraction.  What I mean by that is, many of his paintings are not meant to evoke any real life object or landscape at all, rather, he believes art is an avenue for the artist to create something that brings the viewer to a completely different spiritual or imaginative world.

This painting is considered to be his most impressive piece and the "white border" for which it is named, eluded him for a long time. (It's A LOT brighter and more vibrant in real-life).  The piece is entitled "Painting with a White Border."  The white border is supposed to be a sort of portal for the viewer to walk into the world of the painting.  It also has been described by Kandinsky as an expression of "the peace of emptiness and quiet," which is a sentiment borne out of his experience in Moscow during the chaotic and frightening Communist revolution (the painting was completed in 1913).  To me, it felt a bit "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe-ish."  Especially if you stand on the right side of the painting you can imagine as though you are walking through a white fog into a magical, idealized Moscow.  It is not truly abstract as the painting is inspired by his strong emotions for his homeland and city of birth, Moscow.  The 3 curly lines at the top left represent a troika (Russian sled), and the 3-humped white and brown line in the dead center above the white "scepter," is Saint George on his horse (Moscow's patron saint).  It was very cool to see his sketches and practices leading up to the final beautiful end product.  The way the exhibit was set up, you could almost experience his frustrations, and feel the cogs in his brain turning to conjure what the final piece would look like.
This painting is called "Black Lines" and is considered by some to be the first truly abstract painting ever.  It's beautiful - so strikingly beautiful that after I'd left the gallery and wandered the rest of the museum for awhile, I walked halfway back up the tower just to see it one last time before I left.  Then I got a magnet of it (I know that's lame).

After leaving the Guggenheim, I walked about 30 blocks down Lexington to 54th St to what I was hoping to find:  Buttercup Bakery.  Weirdly I couldn't find it, but I DID find Magnolia Bakery, which is considered to be one of the most famous cupcakeries in all of The City.  So I had to check it out for myself and see what all the hype was about...........

Pistachio cupcake...........

..........chomp chomp........

(note the greasy finger smears on the coffee cup)
Conclusion:  They are really, really good.   I brought one home for Brian :)

Feeling inspired by all of the beautiful colors I saw today, last stop, tulips!
(I got the orange ones at the top)

4:30pm, extremely windswept and home to my little Sofie.

Happy Friday and I hope everybody takes their own Ferris Bueller day!

Rain Rain go away

Good morning - there won't be any picture today.  This Little Dog didn't get to go to any Big Park because it was raining too hard even for us!  We opened the door to walk out and she just looked up at me - like....I'm not goin out there.  So we went back upstairs and I'll have to take her out later (hopefully when it is not pouring).  It was supposed to snow today, but I guess it just got too warm :(  It would have been pretty to walk in the snow.

Anyway, today we get our sign-up sheet emailed to us @ 9 o'clock to sign up for the Cornell ski trip.  We are all going to Killington, VT the weekend of the 28th.  It's such a great deal - $25 bucks to get transportation and to stay for 2 nights.  Then ski rental + lift ticket is special for us only $50.  I think I'll ski one day and then go snowshoeing the next.  A lot of my International friends who are going don't know how to ski and don't want to ski 2 days so I think snowshoeing may be better the 2nd day.  Plus it's only $15 for the whole day.

Also today is the day!!! Immunology final - finally the END is NEAR!  And it is my dear friend Shashi's birthday today so to celebrate tomorrow we will go ice skating @ Bryant Park & then go out for Indian food.  Saturday is Kihyun's Korean New Year celebration so I have lots of fun things planned for the weekend.

Have a wonderful day, everyone!

Hello Wednesday

Wednesday, January 11th, 2012
Central Park East - 8:25am

Good morning!  It was a beautiful day in the Park today.  It was cold enough that the conservatory pond was entirely frozen over, but it was so sunny and blue skied that it felt warm enough for me to not wear gloves and open my coat.  There were lots of people out with their dogs this morning, too.  Today is my last day to study for Immunology - the final is tomorrow, finally (pun intended)!  I'm sick of studying all day, everyday and am ready to get back in the lab.  Monday I'll be back in the lab starting my first day in Joao's Xavier's lab.  I'll be working for a postdoc fellow from the Netherlands named Dave who has 2 daschunds named Peanut and Cookie.  I think it will be a good match - haha.

Don't just have a wonderful day - MAKE today a wonderful day!

The Rescue!

Tuesday, January 10th, 2012
Central Park East - 8:07am

Good morning!  I noticed this plaque while we were out at The Park today.  I think it's a great quote so I thought I'd share it with you.  Emerson was just one of those people who was born to be quoted - he has such an elegant way of putting things.

A few minutes after I took this photo, Sofie met a very cute cream-colored 6 month old Cocker Spaniel puppy named Sweetie (I know...that's a lame name).  This is a funny story, by the way.  So Sweetie's "Dad" is a large, burly, man with a camouflage hunting jacket and fluorescent orange hunting cap on.  There couldn't have been a more comedic pair.  It gets better, though.  So Sofie and Sweetie are playing like crazy - running in and out of bushes, jumping into puppy play stance, chasing one another under the park benches, and both were barking incessantly.  So we get to the Conservatory boat Pond - you know - the little stone pond where people play with sail boats in the summer and fall.  Anyway, we get to the pond, and Sofie likes to run along the edge of the water on the ledge of the stone.  She usually likes to stare in at the ducks (when there are actually ducks there - they're not there now because it's too cold).  She's never fallen in or tried to jump in before, even though she goes very close.

So, as Sofie is running along the edge of the Pond, Sweetie comes charging at her.  Sofie sidestepped and Sweetie went flying straight into the water - which is frozen in some spots so it's very cold.  Well, you should have SEEN Sweetie's "Dad."  He says "Oh my God, She'll freeze!"  and he goes running over to the edge to try and pull her out.  There's no real area for them to climb out because it's just sheer - so he would have eventually had to jump in himself to get her out if he couldn't pull her out.  One thing has made this process a little more difficult than usual.  Because it's winter, the Central Park Conservatory has drained the pond and it's quite low and, hence, difficult to reach down far enough to get her.  Sweetie is paddling along looking up at Daddy with a panicked look on her face and I'm trying not to laugh - mainly because of the pairing of the two!  Remember, this panicked guy is burly with hunting gear on...in NYC's Central Park no less.  So I seize my opportunity to be the heroine and run over in the direction Sweetie is swimming get down on my belly (Sofie's next to me, peering in and wagging her tail fiercely), and lo and behold my freakishly long arms are good for something besides getting things on high shelves and blocking shots!  I grab Sweetie by the harness and yank her out.

Daddy immediately goes to comfort her and tries to pick her up, but Sweetie looks like one of those drunk people who just did the Polar Bear Plunge at the beach in the winter.  She's CRAZED.  She's snorting, rolling, running here and there, rolling in the leaves & grass.  Daddy runs over to fetch her and as he's passing me says "Thank you so much, I don't know what I would have done!"

There's your NY story for the day.  I couldn't make these up if I tried.

My Traveling Companion

My traveling companion & I went to the East River Dog Park this evening (January 9th, 2012).  We got there around 4:25pm.  Her nose gets very dusty in the gravel over there.  As you can see, we found a very nice prize that she chased over & over again.
This is the view from the dog park at 5:05pm- you can see all the way down the side of Manhattan (this is facing downtown) along the East River.  Across the way is Roosevelt Island, which Cornell just bought via a nice gift from Mr. Feeny of the Atlantic Philanthropies.  He's in his 80's and became a billionaire from doing something related to duty-free shopping.  Either way, he gave us 350 billion and we are now building a Technology & Applied Mathematics campus on Roosevelt Island.  Isn't it amazing what people can get rich doing?

I don't think I mentioned before that the bridge you can see goes from Manhattan to Queens, which is further past Roosevelt Island.  You can't see Queens in this picture, its behind Roosevelt Island.

In case you didn't get this yet I was showing you the sunset from le dog parc this evening.  Hope you enjoyed!

This is also a view from the Dog Park.  If you turn completely (180 degrees) from the direction the previous pictures are taken, this is what you see.  Obviously pretty cool, The David Rockefeller University.  As is Cornell, they are one of the premier biomedical research facilities in the entire world.  They might be a little more premier even then us....(but don't tell anyone I said that).  Alas they rejected me when I applied there.  But it all turned out ok!

Good morning, Monday!

The Couch - 9:05am

Good morning!  I can't believe there's no picture today.  While out on my walk Sofie met this very nice & crazy chocolate lab named Matilda and I ended up walking and chatting with Matilda's owner throughout the walk.  I was so absorbed that I just completely forgot to take a picture - so i took one after we'd gotten home and I'd fed her - she gets sleepy on the couch then :)

Matilda was at first a little scary to Sofie.  Matilda is one of those "psycho-labs."  You know, the ones where when you let them off leash, they run all over the place as fast as they can, digging their claws into the dirt to speed them up when they change directions.  Sofie went running up to Matilda sort of warily, because she always wants to say hello, but she was a little scared Matilda might kill her.  As soon as Matilda noticed her, Sofie rolled over and was submissive so that Matilda could sniff her.  (Sofie always does this when she meets a bigger dog).  So Matilda sniffed her, then, as is custom, Sofie sniffed her.  BANG - instant best friends.  After this they ran all over the park together.  Sofie barking incessantly in Matilda's face, Matilda chasing her under every park bench we passed.  They were a match made in heaven.  At one point Sofie picked up a small stick to carry around with her - Matilda plucked it right out of her little jaws and ran off with it - crunching it into a hundred tiny pieces.  Needless to say it was a wonderful day in the Park for Sofie and her new friend.

Have a wonderful day!

Happy Friday!

Friday, January 6th, 2012
Central Park East - 8:15am

Happy Friday!  Sorry my post is a bit late today.  I did an extra long walk with Sofie at The Park today because all I really have to do today is study for this test next Thursday and go to the bank.  My plan for right now is to make myself the usual 3 eggs and a piece of rye toast along with about 5 cups of coffee.  Then study for awhile, go to the bank, and then do something fun tonight.  This Sunday Brian & I are going back to The Blue Note - (jazz club in the West Village where we saw Chris Botti perform on my Birthday).  This was one of his gifts for me for X-mas.  We are going to see a famous drummer named Jack DeJohnette play  Brian is calling it a field trip for me because my New Year's resolution was to learn to play drums from him (and we've been doing a few regular lessons).

Here's an example of a song called Cantaloupe Island he played with the great Herbie Hancock:

That's all for now - have a great Friday!

Central Park-The Great Lawn - 8:35am

Good morning - I think this is the only blue sky that will be captured today - glad I got to see it!  Really didn't want to wake up this morning because I was having such a nice sleep.  I havn't been sleeping very well since I got back from Oregon.  I've been wanting to sleep in late and havn't been tired until like 1 or so.  All you can do with jet lag is keep your normal schedule until you feel more adjusted so that's what I'm trying to do!  Have a wonderful day!

F*CKING COLD

Wednesday, January 4th, 2012
Central Park East - 8:15am

Good morning!  As my title says, it was f*cking cold out there today!  Here's proof!  The Conservatory Pond is FROZEN!  And here's the weather report:

13 degrees!  I was actually a little concerned when we walked out.  I've been walking out when Brian walks to the bus stop on 5th Ave instead of going early b/c I don't have to rush around to be at lab.  It's nice to get a little more sleep than usual, and I like starting our walk with Brian, but I don't get to see the sunrise anymore.  Lab will be starting up soon, enough, though so I should enjoy it while I can :)  Anyway, I was a little concerned because, first of all, Brian doesn't have a hat.  13 degrees isn't TOO bad but for any of you who have ever been to NYC, you know how windy it is here in the winter.  The wind whips off the river and then the buildings seem to concentrate wind tunnels between them.  So I was bothering him to get a hat, because honestly it's too cold without one.  He says he can't just go buy a hat, though, because it has to look good so he needs to plan what kind to get and try various hats on.  Until that occurs I'll just have to listen to him complain and occasionally cover his ears up with his gloves.  We looked at Sofie when we neared 5th Ave and she had little ice spots all over her muzzle.  So I don't know whether that's bad or not but she doesn't seem to mind.  In fact, in this cold she's EXTRA crazy and seems very frisky.  How do I know if she's gotten too cold?

She's off barking at the Mr. Coffee now - which tells me it's near done brewing.  It's time for me to have my coffee and cook some eggs before I start my day of reading & working.

Have an absolutely fantastic day!  It's the ONLY Jan. 4th, 20112 that will ever happen!

Welcome back!

Monday, January 3rd, 2012
Central Park East - 8:25am

Good morning & welcome back to the blog!  It's been a bit sporadic lately since I've been away and because of the holidays, but now it's back for good.  Today was COLD in the park - about 25 degrees F.  More what I expect winter to be like around here.  I have about 2 weeks before I start my next rotation - meaning when I start working in the lab again full time.  Until then I've got lots to keep me busy.  An immuno exam next Thursday, journal club this Thursday, a lab rotation report from Gregoire's lab due this Friday, and about a dozen papers to read by the 3rd week of January.  So, while I won't have anywhere to immediately be in the morning, I'll have a lot to do.  It's good to be home and back to business.  Hope everyone had a wonderful set of winter holidays!  Well, Sofie is clawing at my pants now because she wants her breakfast so,

as always,

Have a wonderful day!!
